Ethics Statement My history in business management taught me that a core system of ethics are one of the most important pillars in the foundation of success. Of course the practice of good ethics ensure legalities are followed...but perhaps even more importantly they create the basis for mutual trust and loyalty with the people that the business relies on. To these people; who are my clients, employees, talent, crew, friends, and family...I want to be an example of integrity, honesty, and trust.
I basically work in two capacities; 1) Owner of Crooked Path Films (usually in the capacity of Director); a turnkey production company who works directly with companies or agencies, or 2) a freelancer who works as a contract worker for other production companies.
Freelancing for Other Production Companies When I freelance, I work with the production company completely free of any "agendas" pertaining to building my company. I do not solicit the production company's clients, even if they approach me first. This includes promotional activities like handing out business cards. I am not there to build my business, I am there to make the project as successful as possible.
Rates I have done extensive homework to create a rate card for my services and gear rental that is consistent with yet competitive to industry averages. I do not pad rates unfairly nor add surprise charges. Discounts are available, but only for one or more of the following situations: 1) payment made up front, 2) multiple projects / days 3) some ultra low budget indie projects, or 4) probono charity work.
Agreements/Contracts I always create some form of agreement between myself and a client. The complexity of the contract depends on the job. I usually just add a signature line to the proposal that spells out the terms. Larger jobs I use the AICP Standard Commercial Production Agreement. I am happy to use a client's preferred form or sign additional agreements (such as an NDA agreement) if required.
Credit, Copyright, and Portfolio I claim credit for the work I perform on projects but do not claim ownership or copyright on works I was hired to create. I do expect to be allowed to display the works to others for promotional purposes unless otherwise agreed to in writing.
